Weight loss: Exploring self-regulation through Mindfulness Meditation

Increasing rates of overweight/obese adults, with corresponding increases in health risks, obesity-related illnesses, and health costs have not been significantly impacted despite research and commercial attempts to provide recommended weight loss strategies. Mindfulness Meditation (MM) teaches individuals to increase their awareness in the present moment which may offer an additional strategy to weight loss interventions. This study explored the effects of MM combined with standard behavioral weight loss intervention (SBWP) on short-term weight loss, physical activity, eating behaviors, food intake and mindfulness in overweight/obese adults. Additionally, adherence, feasibility and acceptability of MM were explored through retention, attendance, diary return rate, MM practice and qualitative interviewing.;This exploratory mixed methods study was a 24 week randomized controlled trial that compared SBWP and Standard Behavioral Weight Loss Program plus Mindfulness Meditation (SBWP+MM) followed by a qualitative interview that explored the experiences of 12 SBWP+MM participants. The sample which was randomized between treatment groups included 46 overweight/obese, 87% female, mean age 45.2 years (SD=8.2), mean weight 91.9 kg. (SD=12.8), 21.7% African American, and 78% college-educated adults living in the Pittsburgh area. Outcome measures of weight, physical activity, eating behavior, food intake and mindfulness were explored at three time points. Data analysis was based on intention-to-treat with linear mixed effects modeling and general linear modeling.;Thirty-five subjects (76%) completed the study. Mean total weight loss was 5.48 kg (SD=2.01) with a significant decrease in food intake (p<.00) and significant increase in physical activity and healthy eating behaviors (p<.000). There was a mean greater weight loss in the SBWP+MM group (6.89kg compared to 4.07kg). Only eating behaviors significantly improved in the SBWP+MM group based on the results of linear mixed effects modeling (p=.034). The SBWP+MM group had higher rates of retention (86.4%) and attendance (75%) and a difference in diary return (15 weeks versus 12 weeks). The overarching SBWP+MM qualitative theme of expanding mindfulness in personal life flowed from taking time intentionally for self to lifestyle changes.;The exploratory results, eating behavior significance and other outcome differences in the SBWP+MM group suggest that a larger sample size over a longer period of time may find further statistical and clinical significance. In light of the current obesity epidemic, hypothesis testing of MM could lead to enhanced weight loss interventions for this overweight/obese population.

Effects of nondirective and directive support on weight loss in an ec

ondirective support (NS; collaborative, flexible) is positively associated with successful disease management, healthy lifestyles, quality of life and support satisfaction, whereas directive support (DS; prescriptive, protocol driven) has negative or no associations with these outcomes. However, DS is advantageous in acute, stressful situations and when an individual lacks skills to handle a challenge. This study manipulated these support types through e-mail exchanges and evaluated their effects on weight loss, physical activity, dietary behavior, engagement, alliance, and satisfaction in a 12-week e-counseling program. Overweight individuals (N = 104) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: NS, DS, or minimal support (MS). All participants received two e-mails each week: (1) weight loss lesson and web link to report weight, daily calories, and exercise; (2) feedback graphs. Participants in the NS and DS conditions also received individualized weight loss support following protocols reflecting each type of support. Participants in the NS condition reported greater NS and a greater ratio of NS to DS than participants in the DS condition indicating participants were sensitive to the support manipulation. There was no effect for weight loss based on treatment condition. Secondary analyses revealed a gender-by-condition interaction. Females lost more weight in the DS condition (10.61 pounds) than in the NS (5.51 pounds) or MS (5.98 pounds) conditions (number of males insufficient for between-group analyses). Participants in the DS condition had greater changes in physical activity than participants in the NS and MS conditions. There were no group differences for dietary behavior and engagement. Those in NS reported greater goal collaboration than those in DS and greater goal collaboration, task orientation, and bond than those in MS. Support satisfaction was greater in NS than DS or MS conditions. General program satisfaction in NS was equivalent to satisfaction in DS and higher than in MS. These findings indicate that DS is advantageous to females during the beginning of a weight loss program, underscore the value of individualized weight loss support to alliance and program acceptability, and point to the importance of analysis of specific aspects of social support and its relationships with behavior and satisfaction.

Acceptability of weight loss treatments among overweight adolescents a

Obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States and has been linked to impairments in physical and psychosocial functioning. Consequently, treatments for obesity have flourished and health care professionals have increasingly turned to more invasive forms of treatment (eg, bariatric surgery). In recent years, the availability of surgical obesity interventions has been extended from adults to adolescent populations. However, research examining the extent to which these procedures are acceptable to overweight adolescents and their parents is lacking. This study sought to examine the acceptability of adjustable gastric banding, a recently developed bariatric surgery procedure, in relation to four other common obesity treatments (ie, dietary therapy, exercise program, family behavior therapy, and weight loss pills). Participants were recruited from a hospital-based weight management clinic. Inasmuch as acceptance is the basis for effective intervention programs, an understanding of adolescent and parental perspectives about obesity treatments in required to inform future weight loss program strategies. Results indicated that across informants (parents and children, boys and girls) gastric banding surgery and weight loss pills were perceived as less acceptable forms of treatment than diet, exercise, and family behavior therapy. There was also no significant correlation between treatment acceptability ratings and body mass index (BMI), health-related quality of life, or number of previously attempted weight loss strategies. Thus, although the number of bariatric surgeries occurring in the United States is on the rise and although gastric banding surgery in particular is being touted as a safer form of bariatric surgery, parents and children perceive this form of treatment to be less acceptable than other weight loss treatments on the market. Further exploration of the factors that influence parents' and children's negative perceptions of gastric banding surgery is warranted because health professionals may have a difficult time encouraging even the most appropriate candidates to consider the surgery if acceptability for the procedure is low.

The obese female and the bariatric weight loss treatment: Potential ad

Self-esteem is the variable that regulates an individual's self-evaluation and self-concept. A high self-esteem is indicative of a high self-worth and a positive social inclusion. A low self-esteem can lead to psychological distress such as depression, anxiety, and isolation. The objective of this study is to examine whether or not the bariatric weight loss treatment has the potential for adverse psychological issues among the self-esteem of the obese female patient. Bariatric surgery is a popular treatment choice among those obese female individuals who have not been successful with conventional weight loss methods such as diets and exercise. The bariatric surgery intervention has been identified as the most effective weight loss treatment program, but very little research exists that has explored the potential for adverse issues. This research design of a repeated measure, between-groups and posttest study, utilizing the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), investigates self-esteem at the presurgical, 4-month postsurgical, and 1-year postsurgical stages after weight loss has occurred to explore the potential for adverse psychological issues.

The Wine and Food Lover's Diet: 28 Days of Delicious Weight Loss

Eat good food, drink a little wine, lose weight! Sounds too good to be true? Not with The Wine and Food Lover's Diet. Created by a sports doctor with a background in nutrition, this is a diet that combines healthful eating with a love of eating. Imagine a meal of bacon-topped arugula salad, pecan-crusted chicken paired with the perfect glass of wine, and closing with chocolate souffl or some ice cream and a cup of coffee and then, even better, looking at the decrease on the scales the next morning. Dr. Phillip Tirman's 28-day plan sheds the pounds and the diet angst. He knows that most diets fail because they're based on restricting the foods everyone loves the most and they're impractical for today's busy lifestyles. So he has developed a lifetime eating plan based on satisfaction, not deprivation. The key to feeling slimmer and healthier? It's the surefire combo that is the foundation of the diet: one protein + two low-glycemic carbs = success. Using this formula, Dr. Tirman has created a menu plan to jump-start weight loss. He clearly and simply describes why high-glycemic carbs promote weight gain, while low-glycemic carbs do the opposite. Included are handy lists of beneficial Savvy Carbs and Super Savvy Carbs, which make it easy to tailor the diet to anyone's tastes plus 100 really delicious recipes with wine pairing suggestions, illustrated in full color. There's also clear advice for choosing take-out foods, for selecting diet-friendly restaurant dishes, and for using the diet to lose weight or simply to keep off the pounds already lost. The Wine and Food Lover's Diet is the ultimate key to a healthier, fuller, longer, and more satisfying life.
